Klas is an innovative Nigerian edtech platform designed to empower individuals to create and grow their own online academies. It serves as a comprehensive solution for creators, trainers, and professionals seeking to monetise their knowledge by offering courses, live classes, and e-books. The company’s mission is to democratize education by enabling anyone to teach engaging online classes, and it has already made significant strides with over 125,000 students and 2,200 online academies on its platform.

Global Reach and Financial Infrastructure

The platform has expanded its reach to over 26 countries, demonstrating its growing international appeal. A key feature driving this growth is Klas Pay, a financial tool that allows creators to accept payments seamlessly. This system supports instant sales, fast payouts in various currencies, and unlimited transactions, removing common financial barriers for educators and enabling them to focus on content creation.

Klas: The Founder’s Story

Klas was co-founded by Nathan Nwachuku and Lekan Adejumo in 2022. The company emerged from Nwachuku’s personal experience with educational disruption, a story he shared in an interview with TechCabal. At the age of 15, he was in a serious accident that led to a six-month break from school. This period of recovery sparked the initial idea for a platform that would allow him to teach physics online and get paid, but he found existing solutions too complex to use.

Proprietary Technology: KlasLife

Unlike many edtech companies that rely on third-party integrations, such as Google Meet or Zoom, for their virtual classrooms, Klas has developed its own proprietary tool called KlasLife. Built from scratch with a unique video architecture, KlasLife operates within a closed ecosystem. This approach ensures a more integrated and controlled user experience, differentiating Klas from competitors that function primarily as toolkits of various integrated services.

Seed Funding and Financial Backing

To accelerate its growth and technological development, Klas successfully raised $1 million in a pre-seed funding round. The round was led by Ingressive Capital and saw participation from prominent investors, including Techstars and HoaQ. This financial injection has been crucial for the startup to enhance its platform features and scale its operations to reach a wider audience of creators and students.

Platform Features and Content Variety

Klas provides a robust set of tools essential for running a digital academy, including scheduling systems, payment processing, community features, analytics, and its proprietary video conferencing. The platform supports a diverse range of subjects, from coding and design to finance, art, and languages, allowing educators to offer content in various formats such as live courses, pre-recorded videos, and ebooks.

Pricing Model and Business Growth

The company employs a freemium pricing model to attract users, offering a free package that includes basic services like recorded courses and ebooks. For more advanced features, it offers paid packages prices ranging from at $30 per month and $100 per month. This strategy has proven effective, with the platform boasting over 5,000 online schools and more than 300,000 students, far exceeding its earlier metrics.

Future Plans and Enterprise Services

Klas has ambitious plans to scale its user base to 100,000 online schools by 2027. To achieve this and increase its revenues, the company intends to introduce new services tailored for businesses, such as employee development and training programs. This move into the enterprise sector represents a strategic expansion beyond individual creators.

User Accessibility and Onboarding

Getting on Klas is designed to be straightforward and accessible. Prospective users simply need to visit the website and create an account with basic information. Once registered, they can immediately set up their online school in a field of their choice and begin offering courses in their preferred format, whether through live classes, pre-recorded content, or ebooks, making the process of becoming an online educator seamless.
